Job Description

We are looking for an independent and  highly motivated PhD candidate to join our Digital Humanities research team in University of Helsinki, Finland. The position provides a unique opportunity to gain widely applicable research skills and make pioneering work in this rapidly emerging research area that takes advantage of massive data collections and modern data analytics to study classical questions in the humanities. The position is open for applications until August 31, 2016 and can be filled in as soon as a suitable candidate is found. The preferred starting date is October 1st, 2016 but can be negotiated.


Our multi-disciplinary research team studies classical research questions in the humanities, supported by novel data analytical techniques that can also be developed as part of the project, depending on the candidate’s background and interests. The open PhD candidate position is funded by the Academy of Finland Digital Humanities project on computational history, where we analyse knowledge production and broader social phenomena in the early modern era by blending historical and computational approaches. You will also join the active digital humanities community in the Helsinki region and have the chance to work in close collaboration with key institutions and experts from Finland and abroad. The doctoral students are expected to contribute also to university teaching.

Desired Qualifications

The doctoral candidate should hold a MSc degree in a relevant research field, or complete one in the close future. An ideal candidate would have demonstrated interest in the humanities and previous experience with R, Python, or other statistical programming languages. We are looking for outstanding candidates with a high level of independence as well as good collaboration skills and analytical capabilities, and welcome applications from students with various backgrounds. Fluent communication skills in English are essential (see English language requirements).  New doctoral students will have to pass the standard enrollment process.
