Are You One Of Those People Who Believe That Just Because You Feel You Are Smart, You Will Get A Job?

You may have heard this sentence from one of your friends. “College will not teach me things that are needed to get a job. If I am smart enough, I will find a good paying job”. We hope you are not one of those who says that. While it may be true that smarter people will be better off than people who are not smart, but the real world fact about college degree has changed over the past 20 years.

With the world getting more and more connected and the job roles getting better defined, companies are actually not seeking out smart people anymore. It is not that smartness is less valued, but they are not as valued as they were valued in the past. There is less need for smartness. Statistics collected by Gonzalo Castex of Central Bank of Chile and Evgenia Kogan Dechter of University of South Wales in Australia show that the financial gains on just being smart has gone down by as much as 50%, while the gains on having a formal college degree has actually increased and is getting higher.

So in this decade remember that it is smart to have a college degree. If you feel that you can do a job well because you are extremely smart, in reality the company will more likely give that job to a person with a relevant college degree instead of you.
