Did You Attend A College Where A Cat Was Your Classmate?

Did You Attend A College Where A Cat Was Your Classmate?

Colby Nolan was a pet cat of the deputy attorney general of Pennsylvania USA. This 6 year old cat impressed the admission officers at a college in Texas with its impressive CV. Eventually, Colby graduated with an MBA degree and a GPA of 3.5, all for $399. This may sound bizarre to some people but Wikipedia lists several known instances in which cats and dogs have received graduation certificates from various diploma mills.

In the US, about 40,000 PhDs are awarded each year. At the same time, an estimated 50,000  fake PhD certificates are also awarded. Some of those who do take an adventure with fake certificates have managed to go far.

A very small handful of college aspirants want to get a fake certificate. A majority of those college aspirants want a college learning experience – the laborious journey of sitting through classes and exams – as much as they want the final degree itself. The question then remains – how do you make sure that your classmate is not a cat?

Thankfully, there is a system in place to check that your classmate is not a cat, and to check that you are attending a college in which the teachers are qualified to prepare you with the skills that you aspire. This system is called accreditation.

Accreditation agencies are often international agencies who perform comprehensive checks on colleges to make sure that the college actually delivers education to students, not fake diplomas. Even big name colleges are accredited by some agency. For example, Harvard University is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

While every student may not be enrolling in a top college, a majority will enroll in colleges that are small and maybe even new. The first thing that each student must do is to check if the college is accredited by an international agency, and check which other colleges the agency has accredited. These two checks are the only way to make sure you are not studying with Colby Nolan, or for that matter, someone else’s pet animal.
